As dog owners we understand the allure of dog friendly beaches and rentals. We take our Brittanys, Harvest Moon and Luna, with us whenever we travel. That includes trips to Beach, Love & Happiness on St. George Island, Florida.
When you own a vacation rental property – especially one you visit with your own family – you’re always thinking of the things that would make your stay a little better. Whether that’s a missing item in the kitchen, or soft and luxurious bedding. Add that to regular touch-ups and updates and there’s always something else to do!
This past Spring we finally had some time to tackle a project just for the dogs. The pups needed a place to play and romp when we’re in the pool.
We decided to put in a dog run next to the pool so they can be with us when we’re outside, but not hot or bored. We picked a shady spot at one end of the property and with the help of a local contractor designed and built the fenced yard.
One of the reasons we chose this spot was for the shade trees that block most of the afternoon sun. To maximize shade and privacy we’ve begun training the branches higher. This provides more shade and allows grass to grow.
The fenced dog yard at our beach house is a generous 200sf with 5′ fencing which gives 2 dogs plenty of room to play, and is outfitted with the largest dog water bowl I could find! To make the run more dog friendly I built and painted a cactus with some of our scraps to serve as a pee post. (You know I love to get a little crafty with paint) It adds a touch of fun (and color) to the area and serves the purpose of a “tree” for Harvest Moon – and other visiting gentlemen puppers.
As no great space is complete without a name – we brainstormed names for a week and finally settled on the Sun Run! And, like any great park, there are rules which you’ll find posted on the fence. 🙂
If you like to travel with your dogs and are looking for dog friendly beaches I recommend planning a trip to St. George Island, Florida. Just south of Tallahassee and east of Panama City Beach, SGI is one of the most beautiful experiences you’ll ever have. No high rises, no chain restaurants… just gorgeous beaches, salty breezes and starry nights.
