Port St. Joe’s story begins with the ambitious city of St. Joseph, which in the 1830s briefly served as Florida’s territorial constitution convention site and rivaled Apalachicola in size and importance. However, a devastating yellow fever epidemic followed by a hurricane in 1841 led to the city’s abandonment.
In the 20th century, the town rose again when the St. Joe Paper Company established a mill there in 1938, transforming the area into a thriving industrial center. The mill operated until 1998, marking another turning point in the city’s identity.
Modern Port St. Joe
Today’s Port St. Joe, with its population of around 3,500, has reinvented itself as a charming coastal community. The downtown area along Reid Avenue features locally-owned shops, restaurants, and galleries housed in historic buildings. The town maintains its working waterfront, with its deep-water port and marina still active, though now more focused on recreational boating and fishing than industry.

When Hurricane Michael made landfall in 2018, Port St. Joe faced significant damage. However, true to its phoenix-like nature, the town has rebuilt and recovered, with many businesses and homes now restored or rebuilt to be more resilient.
